Day Eleven – I T’ought I Was Gonna Die!

That’s a quote from Roseanne Rosannadanna from Saturday Night Live. Some of you born in the 60s and 70s might remember that. =^)
    Today’s Workouts:
  • 2-hrs beach Boot Camp (this includes but is not limited to: running/walking/jogging in the sand several distances, and in relays; pushups, crunches, squats, free weight lifting, stretching, leg lifts, scissor kicks, jogging or walking backwards, and probably a few more that I’m too dazed to remember…all in very soft sand.
  • 2-hrs circuit and cardio
Despite not sleeping well last night and being sore as usual, once again I was looking forward to the day. I wanted to improve on my performance from last Saturday’s workout. We arrive and get started right away with Schuyler and Marco. When we walk down by the water the sand is compact and thus easier to walk on, so I leave my shoes on for that. These Boot Camps are done in the soft, dry sand, so working out in bare feet was easier (but only a little bit!). You do know that doing ANYTHING in soft, dry sand is about a bazillion times harder than doing it on a hard surface, right? And when you have legs that probably weigh 50 lbs each and have to lift them a megazillion times, it sucks the life right out of you. Well….very early on I was tired and drained but I there was no way I was going to give up or complain or cheat myself out of any of the exercises. I even managed to jog a little bit here and there --- I NEVER do that! One of the early exercises was walking around this square bird sanctuary that is fenced off in the middle of the beach. It is half-a-mile round trip. We were instructed to run, jog, or walk at our own pace as best as we can. I was last, of course (which doesn’t matter and doesn’t bother me….if really amuses me more than anything) and did it in 15:12. We did all the other drills and relays and finally near the end of our two hours it was time for a second “bird run.” This time we were to try to improve on our time. So…there I go, trudging along, jogged for a few yards (like, maybe three or four at most! ;-} ) and by the time I get to the second corner of the sanctuary I can see people round the last side of the square. No problem…I’m doing the best that I can. Then, about the middle of the second side, I felt a sharp pain in my left chest. I took some breaths and checked my heart monitor…dang thing wasn’t reading properly; it said only 46. Shit, I knew that wasn’t right. The pain remained, and I looked around and couldn’t see anyone near me. I could see people in the distance on the other side, but no one was in yelling distance (even with my big mouth). I stopped and checked my pulse on my neck and it was over 180. So, now I’m getting worried. I’m scared that I’m having a heart attack and there’s no one close enough to come save me with CPR. I slowed down and kept taking deep breaths, but at this point I’m probably starting to panic a bit. When I got to the third side of the square there was a beach maintenance crew truck nearby, and I was very close to going over to them to drive me back to the start, because my heart would not stop pounding. But I kept going…I don’t know why (probably for fear of embarrassment). When I arrived at the third corner and could see the starting point, I could see that everyone except for Schuyler and one of the bootcampers had started walking to the parking lot. Schuyler called out to me but I waved for him to come to me. By this point I was very upset and very scared. I couldn’t get my heart to stop racing and now I was getting short of breath. I wasn’t having the sharp pains anymore, thankfully. But mostly I was upset because I was scared that no one was close enough in case I collapsed. I stopped to catch my breath and bend over but Schuyler yelled to me as he was running towards me to stand straight and breath. That became hard to do. Schuyler reached me and now I’m crying because I’m just plain scared. Why am I so scared? Because this is my only concern….that I will have a heart attack. I don’t have to worry about diabetes, thyroid problems, high blood pressure, or cancer, but my paternal grandfather died of a heart attack in his mid-40s (he was overweight), and my father had a very minor one (so minor he didn’t feel it, as I recall, while he was in the hospital for knee surgery) in his mid-30s (also overweight), and I am grossly overweight (technically, according to the medical scales, I am considered morbidly obese) and in my mid-40s. This is why I’m attending Camp Technique, to reduce or eliminate my risk of heart disease or heart attack…but I’m still at risk for it for now. So, Schuyler is walking with me back to the starting point and I have almost caught my breath. I get to the van and I break down again when Marco asks if I’m alright. And the van was full of people. It was so embarrassing. I know we all care about each other’s well being but it was still so embarrassing. I felt ashamed for breaking down in front of everyone. Damn this old age….I get more emotional the older I get – usually about happy things. I cried for the gold medal winners at the Olympics and I cry when I get your messages of support. But when I cry because I’m upset, I try to keep that as private as possible. Yeah, yeah, I know…we’re all human. Anyway…we headed to the catering kitchen for lunch, and Marco took the time to remind us all that we need to let them (the trainers) know if we’re being pushed too hard, are in pain, or if there’s any kind of problem. I actually didn’t feel like I was being pushed too hard today. I knew that it was going to be a rough day but I was determined to do my best, and I did. At the kitchen I drank lots more water (I’m telling you, I could empty a Bermuda cistern in three days with the amount of water I’m drinking!) and continued to breathe. Michael sat with me and said that he experienced the same thing the first time he attended camp, and later Sean admitted it to me, too. I appreciate that. I do feel safe in this environment. I know the trainers and staff have our best interests at heart (hah hah…no pun intended). And they’re working for us! So they want to do their best and they want us to do our best and more because it’s true that we can all exceed our own self-expectations. It was comforting, too, to know that I’m not the only one who has experienced this who is still at the camp. Still…I’m embarrassed. I’ll get over it. Tomorrow I know just about everyone will ask if I’m OK, just as I would do the same for them. Because the campers care about each other, too. I love that. It’s not like we’re at some membership gym where people go to work out on their own and leave while hardly knowing the person working out beside themselves (although Bermuda is an exception ‘cause everyone knows everyone!). We all know each other by name and we notice when someone isn’t there and we applaud each other for good workouts and results. That makes for pleasant workouts, for sure!

Ok, so we head back to the gym and still have some rest time before the next 2-hour workout begins. I don’t know if it’s because I’m tired or still feeling distress from what I guess what was a panic attack (which I’ve never ever had before!!), but I still feel like I’m not getting enough breath. No, I’m not short of breath, I just feel like I can’t breathe deeply enough. Despite this, I get my shoes on and join in for the group workout. This involved 2-minute rotations on the mat (abdominals), upper body machines or weights, legs machine or weights, and cardio. NEARLY TWO HOURS of this! I think there were 12 of us doing the circuit. I just took my time and didn’t over exert myself. I did do more weight on the leg press than I usually do, so I was pleased with that. I need that leg strength so that I can get more distance on the bike rides, and eventually do the final hill (or is it a mountain) climb at the end of the bike ride. Oh hell, I just need the leg strength to get over any slight incline on the road ;-) The workout ended and as I walked back to the lounge, Marco asked if I was OK and I wasn’t…I was still upset about what happened earlier. So we went into the trainers’ office and chatted in private. He’s so great. I just needed to let it out some more. I’m OK being alone on the bike rides and doing the swimming and even doing that self-guided circuit. But when I’m in the sand it sucks the life out of me. Geez, I used to love being in the sand. I don’t want to end up hating it – especially that pretty, pink, Bermuda sand. In fact I want to be able to walk the length of Horseshoe Bay Beach a few times when I visit in June (any of y’all care to join me?). OK, I’m not focusing. After my chat with Marco, Arnae chatted with me, too, to give me comfort and support. I love her…she’s a cool chick. Just a couple of years older than I, Arnae just passed her 5-week mark and is doing things that she could not do before. I’m using Arnae, Divya, and Jeni as my role models…I want to be doing what they’re doing at least by the same time they did. And I’m happy to be “last” in all the walks so that Arnae or Divya don’t have to be anymore (‘cause Jeni is a jogging fool, baby, and is never last!).

Alright, it’s time for home and to get on my bike. I love my bike and bike riding, but I think I’m gonna have to put an ice pack “down there” ‘cause it still hurts from the last two bike rides, despite the extra padding ;-P How can I possibly watch TV sitting on an ice pack? Hee hee. Had a yummy quesadilla (with cheese!) and some spicy, fresh salsa (I hope we get that recipe). I think my last meal of the day is flank steak. Yaaaay…red meat! While I’ve been home I’ve still been feeling tentative about today. John’s going to give me a wake-up call, just in case. Tomorrow is our super-short, but no less strenuous, day. A 2-hour circuit with Arleigh this time. I’ve not trained with Arleigh yet so I’m looking forward to that.

Before I say g’night, I was reminded earlier that the tree frogs in Bermuda can be heard now. That is a sound that I DO miss, and one of my favorite things about Bermuda. I know some people hated them and it kept them awake at night, but I loved that “noise.” I meant to buy a TreeFrog CD before I left….anybody know where I can buy one when I’m visiting in June?

And did you do something that gives you joy today? Thanks, Christy, for telling me about your joyful day. Anybody else? Did you see what my cousin Susan said about her dad’s advice? Uncle Dean said, “everyone should sleep 8 hrs, work 8 hrs and play 8 hrs every day!” Well, now, that sounds pretty good to me. Why don’t we all take that advice?

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Day Ten -- You Are Never Too Old To Take Care Of Yourself!

Today’s workout (remember Friday is a short day):
  • Boxing (1 hour)
  • Bike Ride (1 ½ hrs, 14 miles)
  • Posture exercises (1/2 hour)
  • 2-on-1 Training (1 hour)
  • Cardio (1 hr)
I’ll just start with: I FEEL GREAT! I haven’t felt this good in ages. I’m sleeping well and long enough, eating right, exercising, significantly reducing stress, educating myself about nutrition and health, doing things I haven’t done before, and looking forward to achieving and surpassing goals. I wish you could be doing this with me! I really don’t mind doing things alone…I travel alone, go to movies and theatres alone, go to restaurants for lunch or dinner alone, etc. I would RATHER SHARE the experiences with a friend or family member ‘cause it’s just not right for one person to feel joy, wonder, or exhilaration alone. Lots of people should get to feel that, don’t you think? I wish you could all at least feel as good as I do…so my helpful hint to you today is to do something tomorrow that gives you joy (and I would love to hear about it).

This morning I was up about 30 minutes earlier than usual, despite going to bed an hour later than I should. Speaking of sleep…I highly recommend it. For YEARS…I seriously mean YEARS…I have not had such a good night’s sleep that I felt great in the morning. Now three nights in row I have slept well and awakened feeling good. Today all of my workouts were with Marco – it’s only Day 10; I hope he’s not getting bored with me! First there was boxing. I did this last week, too. He taught us a couple of new moves, including a right cross. It’s a great way to let out some aggression. And it’s a heckuva workout. I was winded after this but ready for the bike ride next. This time we were going north on the Pacific Coast Bike Path, up past Venice Beach again; this is the same ride that I did last week on the used bike. I was looking forward to this because (1) I had a new bike and bike shorts for my tushy and (2) I was hoping to go further than I did the first time. It was another beautiful day and I had one of my all-time favorite albums playing on my MP3 – “Street Faerie” by Cree Summer. When I walk I like to listen to show tunes (you know…Broadway stuff) but for riding, Cree is perfect for me. I was on my own for this ride as Marco was pushing the other riders ahead of me harder than usual. I’m still at the “go as fast as you can” pace which is usually no more than 10 miles an hour (my speedometer tells me so). And apparently on Fridays, The Venice Beach “marketplace” is more interesting than usual. I cannot wait to go shopping for some unusual crafts and I’m even considering getting my third tattoo; I haven’t decided what it will be yet, but I’m thinking something to do with weight loss (feel free to submit suggestions!). I was getting tired as usual and I stopped for a drink of water when necessary but I felt good and I enjoyed the sights. I keep missing the surfers….they’re either just getting in or just getting out of the water when I pass them.

What I did see again as I did on the very first ride was this very elderly gentleman on the pedestrian path. He was hunched over and his head is downward but he was using a tall walking stick in each hand to move himself along. I love that! He looks like he’s NINETY years old but he’s still doing this exercise. So what does that tell you???? YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. In fact, I think we each have a moral obligation to take care of ourselves so that we don’t become a forced burden on others. OK, I know that sounds judgmental, and obviously there are people who have no choice in the matter, but for those of us who let ourselves get fat and lazy, it’s our own damn fault and we better be prepared to take care of ourselves and not expect anyone else to do it for us. I’ve accepted for years that my weight, my physique, my fitness (or lack of it), and my lack of energy were my own responsibility and there have been consequences as a result. Now, honestly, if I hadn’t sold my shares in my company, thus making it possible for me to “retire” for at least a year and attend this fitness camp, I don’t know if I would be making the lifestyle changes that I’m making. It is 100% likely that if I was still in Bermuda running e-Moo, I’d still be working ridiculous hours, not getting enough sleep, and not eating properly (I’m not a junk food eater, but I was too lazy to prepare enough vegetables in my meals). I don’t know why I couldn’t get motivated to do what I knew was necessary to get fit. I was already a water drinker and I don’t drink or eat foods with artificial sweeteners such as aspartame or Splenda (thanks to Amy for giving up Splenda!). Those were small steps, but they were the only ones I had taken. I know that I was so overburdened with stress from eMoo that every ounce of energy was sucked out of me. So I guess the lesson I’ve learned is that there must be a limit to work and it must not be your priority (i.e., work to live, not live to work). I could write a whole new blog about why I worked so many hours but that bores me now, it would sound like a bunch of whining and complaining, and it’s in my past. I wish I wasn’t 43 and just now getting started on this lifestyle change, but I can’t waste time regretting that either. Instead I’m wondering what’s in store for me now. e-Moo was a fluke; certain events had to occur in my life that led to the beginning and then my end with e-Moo which made it possible for me to come to this fitness camp. Now I wonder how these current events will turn out. Actually, I’m not wondering about it at all. Other than having an idea of where I want to travel around Europe and Asia from July through December, and knowing that I have to file my tax returns in July (yes, I’m filing for extensions!) I’m not planning anything past June 30th. For once I’m truly living in the moment!

OK, where was I? Oh yeah, I was inspired to see the elderly gentleman with his walking canes and it was a beautiful day for a bike ride and I went one mile further than I did the last two rides. Back at the gym, as I walked gingerly inside (because despite the padded bike shorts and the extra padded bike seat, it still hurts like hell!), I was very pleased with my ride and hungry for lunch. Surprisingly, while waiting for lunch, about 20 minutes later I felt very refreshed and ready to go for the next workout. Lunch was yummy, as usual…make-your-own-turkey burgers. Normally I don’t like ground turkey but whatever Robert and his staff are doing to season them is working! I still had some time to kill so I worked on my posture exercises. Some of them involve simply standing against a wall, but let me tell you….you can feel the fire rising from your calves, up your thighs, through your butt, and up your back and there’s just so much you can take! I’m supposed to hold the position for two whole minutes but I still can’t stand more than 45 seconds at the very most. I really have to work on this one more. Next workout was 2-on-1 training with Marco and the new kid on the block, Courtney. Courtney’s my new-best-friend because she thought I was only 35….and this is me with my hair up, no makeup, and red-faced and sweaty most of the time! I’m really happy for Courtney that she’s at the camp now when she’s so young (only 20!) so that she can lose any unhealthy habits and develop good ones before it becomes way more difficult to do so and while she still has good metabolism. Mine hasn’t quite kicked in yet, I can tell….but I CAN finally see the inches lost in my face (when we worked out in front of the mirror). We had a great workout with Marco as usual. I was ready for the day to be over but there was still an hour of cardio to do. The cardio for me really isn’t that bad because I keep my heartrate in my fat-burning zone and it doesn’t take much to get me there, and I can watch TV while walking. Before you know it, or in today’s case, after two episodes of “Cash Cab” on Discovery Channel, my hour was up and I was heading home on my bike! Have you ever seen Cash Cab? I love that show. Mom and I watched it every weeknight while I was in Virginia. I swear if I ever get lucky and get into the Cash Cab, I’m going to ask Ben Bailey if he’s married. He cracks me up!! And then I’m gonna take (I mean, WIN) all his money ;-)

It’s time for my final meal of the night (those Vietnamese grilled chicken spring rolls that we had in our ‘cooking class’ yesterday). Even though tomorrow’s a short day it will be tough….2-hour boot camp at the beach and then 2-hour group circuit at the gym (with lunch in between, of course). At my first boot camp last Saturday I struggled and cried. This week I know I’ll likely be the slowest but I’m more ready to do the drills.

I hope your weekend is going well so far! And remember…do something that gives you joy this weekend!

Hugs,
Donna

Day Nine – Mamma Mia, I Feel Great!

    Today’s Workouts:
  • Beach Walk (made it to the pier!) 1 ¼ hours
  • Swimming (50 laps with fins, 6 without; about 1 ¼ hrs)
  • Self-trained complete circuit (1 ¾ hours)
  • Cardio Movie (watched “Mamma Mia” while on the treadmill and stationary recumbent bicycle – 1 hour in total between the two pieces of equipment)
  • Finally a very brisk walk home…20 minutes
Hi, Everyone. I had another great day. I hope you did, too! The weather forecast had predicted cloudy skies and a chance of rain in the morning with cool temperatures. Well, it turned out to be a gorgeous day, perfect for walking, rowing, soccer, etc. (Michael Swain, you would die for this area where people row almost daily…it’s long and smooth as glass some mornings!). And thankfully the sand was more cooperative so I was able to trudge my way to the pier and back – that dang left butt cramp keeps creeping up though. Urrrrggh. As we’re concentrating on me doing fat-burning exercises, I was scheduled for another swim today. It was definitely chilly when out of the pool but nice and warm in it. I was happy to get 50 laps with the exercise fins…including 10 laps of freestyle. The freestyle gets me into my cardio zone but I feel like it also helps me stretch my lungs. I was just happy to get 10 of those kind of laps done! I also did a lap without fins because I wanted Josie, another camper, to see that the fins gave more resistance. It was sunny the entire day…that’s a good thing ‘cause I need that Vitamin D! Back at the gym, I went straight to the Catering Kitchen with a few other campers for a quick cooking class. Yum! Rice paper wrapped around grilled chicken which was marinated in a soyaki sauce, rice noodles, shredded carrots, mint leaves, cilantro, and mixed green. We dipped it in the soyaki sauce (gluten-free, but high in sodium). I wanted more of that! Back to the gym where I was originally scheduled to join in the soccer drills, but Marco felt that I shouldn’t be running on hard surfaces in which I could potentially hurt my knees while I’m still carrying so much weight. Well, honey, that was fine with me, ‘cause I don’t like to run! Instead I was given a circuit workout which covered all body parts. Here it is (I DID ALL THIS ON MY OWN IN 1 HOUR AND 45 MINUTES!):
  • 10-minutes cardio
  • Upper Body Machines: 50 Chest Flies, 50 Lateral Pulldowns, 50 shoulder presses, 50 bicep curls
  • 2-minutes cardio
  • Upper body with free weights: 50 chest press, 50 back rows, 50 side raises, 50 hammer curls, 50 OH tricep extensions
  • 2-minutes cardio
  • Lower Body Machines: 50 Leg presses, 50 leg extensions, 50 Leg curls, 50 inner thigh
  • 50 outer thigh
  • 2-minutes cardio
  • Lower body with free weights: 50 regular squats; 50 Duck squats; 50 lateral leg raises; 50 back leg raises
  • 2-minutes cardio
  • Abdominal exercises on mat: 50 regular crunches; 50 butterfly crunches; 50 Russian twists; 50 reverse crunches
I used enough weight to give resistance without tiring me out to increase the fat-burn. I was super-tired afterwards but REALLY PLEASED with myself for doing it on my own, without cheating, and doing it all within the 2-hour workout period that I had. I had enough time for a breather and to have my 5pm meal before our Wednesday Thursday movie night started. Every Wednesday one of the trainers stays late with us and puts a big movie on the screen in front of the cardio machines and we all hop on and burn some calories while the movie plays. Tonight it was “Mamma Mia” which I had not seen (i.e., the movie….I HAVE seen the stage musical in Toronto in 2001). Marco stayed with us this time and the movie was his choice. He said that his wife made him go see the movie with her and he ended up loving it. So cute.

There are new campers arriving this week and next week, as well as a couple of the current ones leaving next week. Today 20 y/o Courtney from Delaware started…with Arnae not there today (I hope she’s OK), I felt like one of the camp moms guiding Courtney on her first day with some of the machines and with what to expect in her first week. I didn’t mind, ‘cause I felt so good. I’m surprised and pleased with how good I feel! Sure I’m sore and tired, but I am excited for what is to come in the next 11 weeks! Even though I dread the thought of climbing “The Dunes” or The Santa Monica Stairs or doing the bike/hike/bike, I can’t wait ‘til I’m conditioned enough to do those things. WHY haven’t I been doing some sort of exercise all along? I dunno, but I’m not going to waste any time regretting it…yesterday is over – move on!

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are shorter workout days (but no less difficult!). I have more boxing and bike riding tomorrow. I’ll use Friday afternoon to unpack the rest of my luggage, which happily arrived today. Don’t worry, it wasn’t the airlines who lost it. It would have cost me an extra $400 to carry the luggage on the plane with me, so I used a luggage forwarding service and paid $240, I think. I’m too tired to do the unpacking tonight, but I want to hook up my TiVo (hmmm, I hope it survived ;-)

The weather is looking up, too. It’s supposed to be gorgeous this weekend (makes for good Paintball!) and will be warming up next week. Yaaaaay! You won’t have to listen to me complain (as much) about the cool temperatures (remember, anything under 80 degrees is still too cool for me). I am EVEN looking forward to this Saturday’s Boot Camp at the Beach….let’s see if I cry like a baby this time! I know it will be difficult but I also know that I will perform better than I did last Saturday – all I care about is achieving more than I did the day before.

Hope you all have fun and/or relaxing weekend plans. For my good friends in the KPMG Tax Department, I know you’re probably working ridiculous hours, but I sincerely hope that you’re taking care of yourself somehow by getting enough sleep and eating healthy. DON’T follow my example! And for all of you who have returned to the gym or to your treadmills or are trying new exercises…keep it up! Or if you’re thinking about getting started…start small. Give up sodas and diet sodas and drink lots of water. That’s a good start!

Lots of love

Donna

Day Eight – Can You…Feel A…Brand New Daaaaay?

”A Brand New Day” is a song from “The Wiz,” written by Luther Vandross
    Today’s schedule:
  • Bike Ride (13 miles, about 1 ¾ hours)
  • Circuit Training (1 hour)
  • 1-on-1 Training Session (1 hour)
  • Cardio/Fat Burning (1-hour)
  • Stretching (1 hour)
  • The Dunking
Today I feel GREAT. I got enough sleep in bed (instead of on the sofa), rode my bike to the office, and was totally psyched to do a bike ride, this time with Schuyler. You’re all right…I was way too hard on myself about skipping one workout yesterday afternoon. When I review the amount of work that I’ve done and the amount of inches that I’ve lost, I had accomplished A LOT in only six days!

It was a chilly morning but I was prepared, even with bike shorts. Schuyler was our trainer this time and took us south down the Pacific Coast. This was a much more difficult ride. There were several hills (I thought I was gonna die!) and the bike path had more ruts and small potholes in it; also the wind was against me on the first part of the trip and near the end of it. Once again I prayed to God to either stop the wind or push me from behind to get through that wind or even up the hills. The beach along this route, towards Manhattan Beach, is not quite as pretty, and OMGawd!!!...we passed this RV parking camp and the smell from the septic tanks was UNBEARABLE! Here I am working on my breathing and I take a big gulp of nasty air that smelled like ASS! GROOOOOOSSSSS! And then I had to pass it again to return. Anyway, I was alone again for most of this ride, which was OK; you can’t really get lost if you stay on the bike path. I stopped a couple of times as needed to catch my breath and drink some water (but NOT anywhere near that RV park). We returned to the office and once again (and this time I have an odometer to prove it) we did a 13-mile round trip. The full trip is about 18 miles; I am confident that I will do that entire trip sooner than later.

Speaking of confidence…mine was soaring high today. I believe it was a combination of getting good sleep, listening to my body and giving it a rest, and reading your messages of support, inspiration, and motivation. I had a good group circuit workout, with Schuyler again. We did 2-minutes of cardio, 2-minutes of upper body work, and 2-minutes of lower body work. Then this was repeated over and over until we reached an hour, and at the very end we sprinted as fast as we could on the cardio machine. I’m still not running but I walked very fast on the treadmill for that little bit. I felt good afterwards….tired, of course, but good. Michael Swain, you’re right about those endorphins! I think they finally kicked in. Despite being tired I couldn’t wait for my next workout to begin.

But first we had a “nutrition tasting” with Karen. She heard about this vegetable and fruit smoothie on Oprah, I think. I can’t remember all the ingredients (but we’re getting the recipe!), but it had fresh spinach, fresh parsley, cucumbers, lime juice, lemon juice, apples, natural sweetener (like Agave Syrup or Stevia), celery, apple juice, and probably a couple of other ingredients. This was all blended together into a bright green smoothie. It was DELICIOUS. And I swear it was so full of vitamins that it gave me energy for the rest of the afternoon. Once I get the recipe I’ll post it. You must try it! PLUS, I thought it would be good with some vodka in it, hee hee! It could be like a Healthy Martini!

Next up was 1-on-1 training with Marco. It turns out there was a scheduling mix up and Amber was scheduled to be my trainer, too. So they shared me. Now, why can’t two single men fight over me like that, hmmmm? Amber is gorgeous (but I like boys) and Marco is married. Anyway, I had 30 minutes with Marco and 30 minutes with Amber. They know that I want to concentrate on fat-burning and my stomach/hips/butt area, so that’s what we did. And not one of the exercises used any weight equipment. Rather, with Marco we used a thick “rubber band” around my ankles and did some exercises on the floor. Baby, I felt that burn!! And then Amber worked with me with the most simple lifts and stretches, but let me tell you, they didn’t burn any less (are you listening, Carmichael? I know what you mean by Body on Fire now!). Following this hour which seemed to FLY by, I had to do 60 minutes of cardio. The gym was mostly empty because the more advanced campers were doing a hike or the bike/hike/bike. I’m sure I’ll be doing those at some point. The hike involves climbing up a mountain…maybe Santa Monica Mountain? I’ll ask about that tomorrow. It’s a lot of work though; you can tell when the campers return and they’re all breathless. Anyway, I enjoyed having the gym mostly to myself. I finally figured out how to change the channels on the TV on the treadmill (OK, nobody be a smart-ass, alright? It involves pointing the remote to some satellite boxes somewhere, and you have to hope that you have the right remote and are pointing at the right box; it’s not like it’s right there on the treadmill, y’know) and so was able to walk about 40 minutes non-stop in my fat-burning zone (i.e., heart rate between 106 – 123; my cardio zone is 123 – 139; I’m working to get that higher!). I also hopped on the recumbent stationary bike to give my knees a bit of a rest (from load-bearing). Again…I was tired but felt awesome.

My final workout was meant to be Boot Camp in the Gym but due to another scheduling mixup, Amber went ahead and gave about 8 or 9 of us a really good stretching session. As I’ve said before, I’m very flexible, but there are some stretches I’ve never done before and they hurt, baby (but in a good way); in fact I think one of the stretches might have cured my recurring cramp in my left butt muscle ;-). I’m continuing to feel great and confident and can’t wait to get dunked.

Get DUNKED, not get DRUNK, you silly people! We get “dunked” in order to measure the body fat percentage versus the lean mass percentage. The dunk tank is a giant tub with warm water (thankfully!). In it is a metal frame that is roughly 5ft long and 2 ft wide. This is suspended on a weight scale that kind of looks like one of those weight scales that you see in the produce section of a grocery store. Fat weighs less than muscle, so the fat in the body basically “floats” to the top and this is what gets measured (it’s more complicated than that, but that’s the gist of it). One wears a swimsuit to get measured, and with elbows tucked in close to the sides, one holds onto the front bar and also to the back bar of the frame with just the tips of the toes (literally!). Then, the person being measured must completely submerge him/herself and exhale every bit of air out of the lungs so that the muscle weight sinks the body, and then the scale measures the body fat in grams (don’t ask me how…I don’t know!). It can be a bit of a scary experience if you panic because you think you’re going to drown; you have to exhale and then stay underwater with no breath for several seconds. For best results, the process has to be done 3-5 times so that the person administering the test can be sure that he or she achieved the best possible measurement. Arleigh, who usually administers the test, said that I was easy to measure because I got rid of all the air, I didn’t fidget around, and I wasn’t fearful and thus stayed underwater long enough. So…that’s another thing at which I’m talented…voluntarily drowning myself! ;-) The dunk is usually done once every two weeks, but since I had lost so few pounds but many inches, I think they wanted to assure me that I was indeed losing body fat and building muscle. And that is what the test results revealed…I had lost body fat but gained a little bit more muscle. That made me feel a lot better about the previous day’s weigh-in…but by this time I had stopped being upset about that. I am certain the fatigue just got to every inch of my mind and body.

After this test I dried off, dressed, and headed home on my bike. Monday through Thursday are long days…they always start at 8am and end at either 5, 6, or 7pm. Today was a 6pm day. Yesterday, if I HAD stayed, would have been a 7pm day. And tomorrow is going to be a 7pm day. But as you can see from the schedules that I’ve posted, we’re not working out the entire time, however at a minimum I’m putting in 5-6 hours on those days with breaks for massages, nutrition meetings, counseling meetings, meals, or motivational speeches in between. Fridays, Saturdays, and especially Sundays are shorter days. Tomorrow I have only 4 workouts, BUT, they are the Beach Walk (which zapped me of all of my energy yesterday), swimming (more chance to fat-burn), soccer drills (omigosh, I might have to run!), and the “Cardio Movie.” I’m guessing this is every Thursday, and this is when we hop on a treadmill, bike, elliptical, or whatever, and watch a movie on a big screen while burning calories. It’s looking like bad weather tomorrow....it will be cold and wet, the worst combination! I have a poncho for weather like this. And I’m wondering if this means we won’t be able to swim. The pool is heated and I guess as long as there’s no lightning, they’ll let us swim. We shall see!

I was reminded of the song “Brand New Day” from “The Wiz” today. It’s a very uplifting, joyful song; years ago in Dance Team Camp, we started every day with an aerobic dance routine to that song (the whole camp of all the many dance teams’ members). It would put me in a great mood. Today felt like that…I can’t remember all the words or even the dance routine to that song, but I sure do wish I could ‘cause I would have danced to it on my own. Today felt like a “brand new day.” Hah…now that I think about it, we ALSO did a second dance aerobic routine to “Work That Body” by Diana Ross (or was it “Let’s Get Physical” by Olivia Newton-John?) and I remember enjoying that, too. Hmmm, I wonder if Amber might give us some dance aerobics in the near future (Amber, are you listening?).

As always, thanks for your support and encouragement. You know what I love about our notes and messages to each other? When I write them, MOST of you are already in bed or close to it (not the West Coasters, of course!), so you write your messages in the morning. When I read them around 6 or 7am my time, it’s already 9 or 10am your time and you’re into your day, but I’m just getting started and your messages are such a nice bonus to start MY day. It means the world to me.

Much love to all, and have a great Thursday!

Day 7 (Tuesday, March 10th (Happy Birthday to my sister, Kitti)) WEIGH-IN

But first, there was another beach walk. After feeling so great yesterday, I was excited about today – the beach walk, the abs/core work, everything. Apparently my body was NOT so excited and decided that it had had enough. When we arrived at the beach, I walked down to the sand. The tide was higher than last Wednesday so the sand was soft by the water and thus harder to walk; on top of that, my legs just STOPPED working. It was if I was lifting a sack of mud with every step I took. I was immediately fatigued. I went about 2/3rd of the way, I guess, and then headed back. Nicola walked with me a bit and I talked about how I was suddenly feeling so tired (more than usual) and that it feels as if there’s no down time (and I think that schedule above proves that!). My schedule for this day had me away from home from 8am to 7pm (keep in mind that 1 hour was for lunch and 2 hours were for nutrition and massage). Nicola said (I can’t remember her exact words) that it’s not uncommon for someone like me to get fatigued after such a busy workout schedule and perhaps my body just needed a little more rest. So she let me skip the final workout of the day, which would have been a 90-minute Gym Boot Camp ending at 7pm. I was grateful for that, but was also hopeful that my weigh-in would be great and perhaps I would feel energized from that. Inwardly, I could not get over how physically tired I was. We get back to the gym and I get weighed and measured. I’m not going to say how many pounds I lost because it was disappointing to me (but not unreasonable…I just had high expectations; in reality it was a reasonable loss). The measurements revealed more though…I lost 11 ½ inches altogether, mostly between my shoulders and butt. So, I’m very pleased with that. I can’t SEE it, of course, but what it means is that I’ve lost 11 inches of fat but gained more muscle. Normally that would be a good thing, but I already have enough weight from muscle. So…tomorrow, Wednesday, I’m going to get “dunked” again so that my BMI (body mass index – or to put it simply, the percentage of weight that is from fat vs muscle) can be measured. I have no doubt that my muscle weight will have increased and my fat weight will have decreased. 11 ½ inches in 6 days is actually pretty amazing, but I just couldn’t get excited about it – I can’t help but think that my fatigue today had a lot to do with that.

Next on the schedule was an Abs/Core workout with Schuyler. It was difficult as expected, but despite my fatigue, I managed; as I mentioned in yesterday’s note, I want to make getting rid of my stomach fat my top priority. This workout was followed by swimming! Well, guess what…the outside temperature was pretty chilly! But the water temperature was around 80 degrees and when you’re kicking non-stop for 60-minutes, you forget about the chill. For this swim I did use a pair of the exercise flippers (these are very short fins, nothing like SCUBA or snorkeling fins) mainly because I wanted to do more lengths of the pool – and I did. I did 50 in total! All but 6 lengths I used the kickboard, and for the other 6 I did freestyle. I find that my heart rate goes up faster when I do freestyle, so I do the freestyle for cardio and the kickboard for fat-burn zone. I also find that using the kickboard actually forces you to tighten your abdominals. I felt good about the 50 lengths, but I was still feeling fatigued. Do you know what I mean? I was just completely zapped of every ounce of energy. We head back to the office for lunch, and then a workout with Amber (the Queen of Abs/Core). This was a good workout using isometric exercises, stretching straps, and big foam blocks. Other than using the treadmills to warm up and warm down, we didn’t need machines or weights to get a killer workout. We actually concentrated on our butt and legs – I swear my butt will probably still be big but it better be damn tight by the time my 12 weeks are finished!

At this point I’m still devoid of all energy, so I decided that I was going to skip the Gym Boot Camp and get home so that I can rest. I had a nutrition meeting with Karen; besides being educational these sessions are very entertaining! This was followed by my massage with Nina (we get two massages a week, so I’m guessing mine are on Tuesdays and Fridays). This was a welcome break and just what I needed to help me from stressing out about skipping a workout (because I actually HATED to skip it – I felt like a loser for doing that!). After the massage I let Marco know that I was given permission to skip his workout. He seemed really sad about that so I felt really bad for skipping! But I knew that I just had to give my body a rest so that I could be rarin’ to go for Wednesday. After getting my schedule I headed home and it turns out that Tuesdays are also the day that Grace, the Head Housekeeper, serviced my apartment. What a nice treat! Well, it’s included in the whole fee for the Camp, but for me, it’s a real treat as I’ve never ever had housekeeping done for me before. I love it and I’m pretty sure I’m going to be spoiled by it. Tomorrow if I’m not too tired I’ll tell you what Felleng (from South Africa) told me about housekeeping and childcare in South Africa; very interesting to me!

Tonight I put away some laundry and rested on the sofa, but I also prepared for tomorrow…I have biking again (yaaaay, I can use my shiny new bike!) and also the BMI test, so I need biking clothes, workout clothes, and my swimsuit again…more than the usual stuff to pack. I heading to bed now. I’ve fallen asleep on the sofa three nights in a row so I want to be extra certain that I’ll get a good night’s rest because I want to start Week Two with renewed energy and motivation. Tomorrow’s schedule is already prepared, but I hope that after the BMI test it will be revealed that I need to do more fat-burning exercises. My schedule for tomorrow is a bike ride, a group circuit, a group nutrition session, a 1-on-1 session with Marco, 60-minute cardio, and Gym Boot Camp before I have my BMI.

So, despite my tempered-down demeanor today, I’m happy with the 11 ½ lost inches. This means that there’s 11 ½ less inches to love, but a stronger heart to love you back. Have a great Wednesday, everyone!

Day Six – I Want to Ride My Bicycle, I Want to Ride It When I Liiiiiiike (Mon., Mar 9th)

Warning...this one is the longest yet.

First, once again I want to thank you all for your words of encouragement. Not only do I think you’re all amazing and inspiring, but my trainers do, too! Some of them have read my notes and are so impressed by all of you for being so supportive. I’m shedding a little emotional tear right now because I am truly thankful and blessed for knowing all of you.

Today started as usual with breakfast at 7am. So far every morning I am exhausted and sore, even if I’ve had a good night’s sleep, but worse than that, I still have a little bit of fear over what is ahead that day. I’m always anxious that I won’t do as well as I should or that it will look like I’m not really trying very hard. That’s just me being hard on myself…it’s a character flaw with which I have to live ;-P

The first workout of the day was one of Amber’s yoga classes (Amber…what’s your style of yoga called?). It’s TOUGH! Happily it was in a room in the fitness center in the office so I didn’t have to hoof it as I usually do to the office -- l haven’t quite got my timing down right so I’ve been a couple of minutes late a few times (I really hate that…it’s so rude!). I figured out (while I was struggling to rise into the umpteenth “downward dog” position) that the reason I’m having so much trouble with all these yoga/abs/core workouts is because most of the fat weight is in my abs/core….aaaargh! I just cannot do a proper pushup, or even the “knees-bent”-style of pushup, and I can’t touch my toes NOT because my leg muscles are too tight but because my big, disgusting stomach is in the way. I need to get rid of that thing. Did any of you see the musical “Full Monty”? There’s a scene where the chubbiest of the male dancers sings a love song to his belly (hilarious!) because he knows he should say goodbye to it. Well, I’m not loving my basketball (that’s what it looks like, y’know, a friggin’ basketball) at all and I want to SHOUT IT OUT. So, whatever I have to do to get rid of that first is my priority.

I must make a slight diversion…Danielle, who works with Chef Robert, just delivered my meals for tomorrow. YUM! Egg scramble with ham, bell pepper, cheese & breakfast potatoes, Chiliquelas with turkey, sour cream, beans, cheese, tortillas, and fresh salsa, AND grilled SIRLOIN (!!!) with roasted potatoes and vegetable medley. I was gonna save the sirloin for last, but since the chiliquelas has beans in it, I’ll have that tomorrow night to spare my trainers and fellow Campers any involuntarily escaped bodily functions. In general, I find pretty much all bodily functions to be quite gross. And let me tell you, when you’re eating right and exercising, you definitely notice a change in some of those bodily functions.

After finishing up with yoga, I had a few minutes to relax and get myself organized for the day (because the first time I did it before yoga this morning I was spastic and forgot some important things…like water, and my wallet!). I walked to the gym (I keep calling it the office…it IS my full-time job at the moment!) with a little bit of anxiety about the “Bike Ride with Marco.” Well, not the part about Marco…he’s great and I knew he would watch out for me. I was mostly nervous because (a) I can’t remember the last time I was on a bicycle….at least 20 years, I’m sure; (b) I didn’t know how far we were going ‘cause I knew we were going to be away from the gym for nearly two hours and was worried I couldn’t keep up; and (c) I think many of you know that my younger brother Patrick was only 16 years old when he was killed while riding his bicycle on the side of a road in Marrero, Louisiana; he wasn’t wearing a helmet and he had stayed far enough off the road to avoid speeding traffic, but apparently a drunk driver swerved very far off the road and hit him (it was hit-and-run; no one has ever been arrested for this crime). Had he been wearing a helmet, there’s a chance he might have survived, as he did have some internal injuries but I understand it was his head injuries that caused his death. He would have been 42 last November. So, the fact that we were going to be sharing the road with cars and trucks was a little scary to me, and I wasn’t sure if I would be coordinated enough to do it all. The Camp provides bikes and helmets for us, so I just had to find the one that was short enough for my height, but then had to adjust the seat for my legs…this took a bit of finagling with Marco and typical me was worried about holding everyone up. Finally we get started. I said my usual, “Dear God, please get me through this” and followed the leader. Michael, one of the campers, has done the ride a few times so he led the way from the gym to the Pacific Coast Bike Path which parallels the Pacific Coast Highway. To get there we had to ride on the sidewalk and “thread-the-needle” a few times to get around sidewalk signs, bus shelters, or people! I managed, thankfully; it’s true what they say….you never forget how to ride a bike! Very quickly (although it seemed like forever to me since it was my first time), we arrived at the part of the main road where a bike lane started and thus there we go, sharing the road with crazy CA drivers! Actually, it wasn’t bad at all; I’m being silly ;-) We get down to the Pacific Coast Bike Path and we’re on our way. At the point we joined the path it was about the 15-mile marker; we travelled north. There were 6 of us riding today, plus Marco. Four of us were experienced campers and thus were able to get ahead very quickly. I had them in my sight for awhile, but once I lost Jeni, that was it! In the meantime, Marco stayed behind with another camper who had an old knee injury that was affecting his ride, so I found myself alone for about 3 miles. This was OK…I was concentrating on my ride, staying in the lane, and taking a few glances left and right to see the sights (all while maintaining a good speed and my cardio-zone rate, of course!). We passed Venice Beach. I cannot wait to visit this on my own. It looks a lot like the French Quarter and the French Market in New Orleans with all the craft shops, tattoo parlors, music shops, vintage clothing stores, etc. To the left was an even better view….the ocean, with Santa Monica Mountain (I think?) in the distance. It was a beautiful day, thankfully, and I just loved seeing and hearing the waves crashing along the beach. There are birds all along the coast. At one point there was a huge flock which “lifted”, rather than flew, and then settled down again, in slow motion. Seriously…it was like I was looking at a film in slow motion. It reminded me of the giant waves of surges that I’ve seen in Bermuda when out on the WildCat Catamaran….hah – it was fun when we went over those – Grabbed some air, baby! There was a group of condos that all had spiral staircases right next to each other, so it was as if there was a competition to see whose staircase was the most architecturally beautiful or silly or whatever. I liked the bright yellow spiral staircase the best. I kept going without stopping; I couldn’t see Jeni or Michael in the distance nor could I see Marco and Brian behind me. What I could see in the distance was the Santa Monica Pier – HELLO! Rollercoasters & Ferris Wheels! I HAVE to go do that on a Sunday (when it’s warmer, of course) ‘cause I love rollercoasters! It was pretty far off though and silly me hoped that I would find the leaders waiting there for us…maybe doing some crunches or squats in the sand. Hah! I finally get there and keep going and going and going. I did pause to catch my breath and meet up with Marco ‘cause I wanted to know where the end was. Normally we would have gone all the way, but after we passed the 20-mile marker Marco had Brian and me stop to catch our breath and turn around. As there was a time constraint (had to be back at the office at noon) we weren’t going to make it to the end, which was another 3-5 miles ahead, I think. That was OK with me, ‘cause I was tired and my ASS HURT! OK, not really my ass, but you know what bones I’m talkin’ about, don’tcha? You know…the ones that sit on those teeny little bike seats. I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to find anyone to massage that sore spot. I’m pretty sure I’m bruised down there!

We turned around, and wouldn’t you know there was a headwind. Horrors! I thought I had done pretty well by then ‘cause I knew we had gone about 6 ½ miles without any trouble other than getting tired. WELL! NOOOOO, my first bike ride just HAD to be difficult, didn’t it? Alright, so I’m pushing the pedals harder, trying to fiddle with the gears to get it to the best resistance to push against the wind, and seriously praying to God, “Please put Your Hands behind me and push.” I was alone again for a little while and I swear I was weeping occasionally because I was so physically exhausted. Marco and Brian caught up with me and I had to stop for a quick breather. After that we kept going and Marco commented about how pretty it was out there, at which point I said that I couldn’t wait to write about it. I also can’t wait to take some photos! That’s kinda hard to do when I’m holding on for dear life to the handlebars. I’m pretty sure I took another quick little breather, and then FINALLY made it to our entry point. There was still no sign of the lead pack but Marco assured me that Michael was leading the way and they knew to return back to the gym on time. So we kept going…back onto the road and the bike path, sharing again with those drivers, and then suddenly we were back on the sidewalk and before I knew it we were back at our street and at the gym. I calculated mentally what we had travelled, and while I was exhausted and my butt bones STILL HURT (they still hurt now as I’m sitting on the sofa and typing!) I was gobsmacked with myself because we rode 13 miles round trip, and then I was really proud of myself because I had never ever done that before! And I survived! And you know what?…I liked it. It felt good to be riding, feeling the air, seeing the ocean, the sights…I really liked it. I thought about a couple of the other campers who I usually see heading to the gym on their bikes in the morning, and it made me think that, “Hmmmm, I can get to the gym faster and maybe I won’t keep getting that cramp in my left gluteus medius since I’m usually trying to rush to get to the gym.” So once I returned to the lounge area for lunch, I asked Vernon, one of the bikers, about his purchase. Before lunch, I overheard Jeni (sorry, I wasn’t intentionally eavesdropping ;-) say that she had lost another 9 lbs in one week; and it was the end of Week 5 for her. It was so exciting for me to hear that! I get excited when the Biggest Losers contestants have big numbers like that. And of course it gives me hope that I can do as well. I watch all of the campers who are like me and who have been there longer than I and I want to be at least at their level in the same time span. I mean…Jeni runs at the beach! Yuck! I have no desire to do that, but I do want to get up to the level where I CAN do that. Anyway, I am thrilled for her and I am hopeful that I’ll have some good numbers at my first weigh-in…whether it’s inches or pounds (because after all, it’s losing the INCHES that will get me into smaller clothing, baby). We had lunch and a group meeting with the counselor, Claire, which finished in an hour, so that gave me an hour to go SHOPPING – for a bike! Just like the athletic shoe store, the bike shop gives Camp Technique campers a 10% discount, so I went in there, said I needed a bike, helmet, lock, computer, and bike shorts. They set me up with a bike that has a NICE SEAT CUSHION, so when I rode it and went over bumps or potholes, it didn’t hurt so much! I’ll take a picture and post it. I made it back on time for the next training session, Group Circuit with Marco.

I know I mention Marco a lot but it’s mainly because I have had the most training sessions with him. I hate to say he’s my favorite because there’s something special about Amber and Eric that I love, too. At this point I hadn’t trained with Schuyler or Arleigh yet, although I did have a 1-on-1 session with Schuyler scheduled after the circuit with Marco (and I was anxious about that, too, ‘cause I’ve seen him be tough on some campers!). Anyway, Group Circuit in this instance was 4 or 5 women doing cardio and then working specific muscle groups on various machines or equipment. I was on a machine new to me today…a rope puller (OK, I forgot to look at it to see what it was officially called). I sat facing the thing, and there’s this big fat rope on a pulley system in front of me. The exercise was simply to continuously pull down on the rope; this worked my upper back and arms. Well it certainly wasn’t SIMPLE to pull down a rope for 2 minutes without stopping, and it was set on the “easy” setting. A couple of more exercises and then back on the treadmill for cardio. We repeated that round and then Marco had us get on the mat and do pushups. OK, what did I just say earlier….that I can’t do pushups! BUT, he had us do them on those giant exercise balls. I still stated (with my mouth open in shock), “I can’t do that.” He made me do it anyway, and guess what, I sort of did it. We had to roll forward on the ball so that it was under our hips/thighs and our hands were forward, and then we had to push down to the mat. It was hard, but I managed a few of these so-called “pushups.” As I’m writing this, it reminds me that that is the second time I said, “I can’t do it” during an exercise so I’m NOT GOING TO SAY THAT ANYMORE. Back to another round, and this time when Divya and I were on the rope machines, mean ol’ Marco comes and puts the settings on 5 (on a scale of 1-7, with 1 being easiest) and made us go THREE minutes this time. Of course both of us moaned out a growl and I told him, “You’re not my favorite anymore, you big meanie.” (No, I don’t really mean that!). We finished up the Group Circuit with some boxing, and I do enjoy doing that, but it still sucks the life out of me. The whole time we’re working with Marco, I was occasionally glancing at Schuyler who was working with Alex, an elite female marathon runner. Of course he’s working her very hard, but she is accustomed to it, and I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be doing the same workout. Even so, I was still a bit anxious about what was to come.

Well, no need for that!!! Just as I was needlessly afraid of the exercises that I thought Amber would have me do a few days ago, Schuyler was well-prepared for me and knew what my level was and thus there was no reason to be anxious. I was still concerned about my heart rate. It was perfect during the bike ride but during parts of the Circuit it was getting up there, and I was going right into Schuyler’s session. He was aware of that and kept it in mind the whole time. He also asked what I’d like to do and since I had just done upper body work with Marco, I suggested leg work, and we went with that. Schuyler was great. He already knew about my knee surgery and wanted to be sure that I had no pain as a result….and I didn’t. The only thing weird that happens with my knee is that some of the nerve endings on my knee never came back or ended up in a different place, so some parts of it are numb to the touch and if you touch it on the outer part of the knee, I FEEL it on the inside! Strangeness ;-) Anyway, Schuyler kept me going for a full hour with some really good leg work and we managed to chat and laugh a lot. And thus the last workout of my day left me tired but in good spirits.

Time for my 4pm meal and a chance to get to know Josie, a Camper who just started today, and chat with a couple of other campers about our day. We were also waiting on our schedules, so I was cooling down, but I was anxious to get on my shiny new bike. They arrived, I said g’bye to everyone, and headed home. Well, what a delightful experience that was on a new bike with a cushy seat (my butt bones were thankful!). I would say that I can’t wait to ride it again in the morning, but guess what…..we have Boot Camp first thing (this is when they take us to the beach for walking, running, or drills) in which they’ll pick us up at the apartment complex and then will return us to the gym – I’m not quite ready to ride my bike to the beach yet so I’ll have to walk home tomorrow. Awwww (feel sorry for me? Don’t. I know that every walk that I do is helping. Tomorrow is a busy day AND my first weigh-in!!!!!!! OHMIGAWD! I don’t know what to expect and I don’t want to hope for anything (but you know I am hoping). I’m not going to say what I hope the results will be. The weigh-in happens after the morning walk at the beach so it will be a chance to burn a few more calories. Later there’s abs/core work, which you know is tough for me, but since abs/core is now my top priority, I’m going to give it my all. Then there’s swimming again. Yaaaaay! I’ll try to do an extra set of laps…I did 34 last week so I’ll shoot for at least 36 this time. I’m also looking forward to Nutrition with Karen since she’s a hoot (yes you are, Karen!) AND my second massage. Yippee! But uh oh, I see another boot camp on the schedule at the end of the day, and I’m sure it will be a doozie. That’s OK. I’m feeling motivated and inspired – by your support, by Jeni’s results, by a pretty good bike ride, by knowing that the trainers are really looking out for me.

Have a great day everyone, and thanks again!

Day Five – I Think My Heart is Going to Explode! (Sun., Mar 8th)

My first Sunday had only one 2-hour workout planned but I knew it was gonna be a doozie. Dingaling fell asleep on the sofa though and thus didn’t get a great night’s sleep, so I didn’t start the day quite right. And one thing I’ve learned….eat the meals and have the shake as scheduled, dingaling! I’ve found that if I haven’t had a meal or shake as scheduled, then I have less energy for the workout or even just for doing laundry or anything around the apartment.

Anyway, after a relaxing morning…in which I relaxed too long! – I walked to the gym for 10am…but I had a massive cramp in my upper butt…I mean, the left gluteus maximum, or maybe it was the gluteus medius (don’t be impressed, I had to look up the second one ;-) so as soon as I arrived I dropped to the mat to stretch it out. Amber had us get ready for her circuit with a cardio warmup. There were 13 of us (ladies only today – GIRL POWER!) so Amber set up 13 different exercises (mostly on machines) on which we would rotate, but we would do 2 minutes of cardio on a steep incline (evil!) in between each exercise. We were assigned in order according to our abilities, so of course I was at the end – but that doesn’t bother me…I’m just explaining how we were positioned. After our cardio warmup we went to our designated stations and did the prescribed exercise for 2 minutes. So….it was 2 minutes at a station, and 2 minutes on the cardio (i.e., treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, etc). Every other station or so, before we returned to a cardio machine, Amber would have us do another drill in place – like squats, jumps, side bends. It was a good all-around workout. I think all parts of our bodies were worked, or if not, certainly most of the muscle groups were. I like the legwork best – as long as it’s on machines. I sure don’t like it when it’s at the beach in the sand! Anyway, my heart rate kept going higher and higher. According to my first weigh-in, oxygen-intake, and BMI analysis, I shouldn’t exceed 139 bpm for maintained cardio rate. Well, it was hanging out at 145 most of the time, and then at the last cardio it spiked to 182. Yikes! This really scares me. I’m not fearful of getting injured, but I am terrified of having a heart attack! I mean…I’ve been sitting on my big arse for 4 years with not one second of exercise, and suddenly in 5 days I’ve done more than I have ever done since 2005 (I used to workout at Curves in Hamilton, Bermuda). So I can just imagine that I’m going to do some strenuous exercise and take a break and then BOOM there I go. Well that would just suck, wouldn’t it? I haven’t done my trip through Europe and Asia yet! Anyway, I let Amber know that my heart rate had gone so high. Thankfully it was the last cardio so I slowed my pace; my heart monitor watch was indicating “STOP.” OK…so next we go for some stretches, and I’m still concerned. A few minutes into the stretching I check the monitor again and now it’s over TWO HUNDRED! Good Lord! WTH?! The weird thing is it didn’t feel like my heart was racing; other than tired from the workout I felt OK. Amber checked my pulse directly and it didn’t seem to really be that high, so I’m hoping it was just a fluke with the monitor. So after the stretching (and the self-obligatory splits) we all gathered in the lounge area for a fabulous fruit basket which Jeni’s Mom had sent (thanks, Jeni!), I had a shake and lots of water, and just plain rested. I wanted to be sure my heart wasn’t doing anything crazy. It got back down to 100 (still high for resting rate) but I wanted to get home as soon as possible so that I could just rest.

But first I had to go to the bookstore! There are several retail shops nearby so I really don’t need a car at all. Every day I pass a Toyota dealership and I keep eyeing the Rav 4s….I’ve wanted one of those since they came out several years ago ;-) There are lots of temptations along the way….Starbucks, McDonald’s, restaurants, Panera Bread, etc….but I’m too tired to cheat! No, truthfully, I don’t want to ruin any good work that I’ve done so far. Anyway, before heading back to the apartment from the bookstore, I rested again, then went home, had my meal (yum….turkey lasagna with broccoli; delicious!), and rested. I have another heart rate monitor…this thing you wear on your finger, like a ring. After literally doing nothing but resting for an hour or so my heart rate was down to 77. My goal is to get that resting heart rate lower, of course. Later my dear friend John pointed out that my monitor might have picked up the rates on someone else’s monitor if it was close enough to her…that’s a good point! So I’m a little less worried…but only a teeny bit!

Today was a gorgeous day in MDR…beautiful blue sky and cool temperatures (still too cool for me!). But it makes for a nice walk. Sadly I was too tired to sit on the complex’s sundeck to enjoy the beautiful day. I will get there on another Sunday. I hope it warms up soon! Now it’s on to my final meal of the day (even though I’m not really hungry) and finally unpacking the last of my luggage…but more is coming this week (Hello my little TiVo, I’ve missed you)! Tomorrow starts early with yoga, then my first bike ride (out here, silly, first ride ever!). At the end of the day it looks like I have a 1-on-1 with Schuyler, a trainer with whom I’ve not worked yet. I bet he’s tough, too! It’s OK…I can take it!

Hope y’all had a good weekend despite losing an hour of sleep and have an even better week ahead.
